Spain turn on the style

Spain made light work of Turkey in Nice on Friday as a total team performance led them to a 3-0 win, writes WADE PRETORIUS.

While goals from Alvaro Morata (two) and Nolito helped Spain to take their Euro 2016 tally to six points, it was a complete team effort that ensured the win over a plucky Turkish side.

According to SASoccermag’s Opta-powered match centre, Spain enjoyed 65% possession as they crushed Turkey by controlling the ball and preventing their opposition from testing David De Gea in goal.

Perhaps a real indicator of why Spain strolled to victory was that players like Manchester City’s David Silva went unnoticed. The City playmaker was subsituted midway through the second half after completing 92% of his passes. He made 5 crosses, had 3 shots, created two chances for his teammates and completed two take-ons yet he was overlooked as a major contributor to his side’s success.

Andres Iniesta again was in fine form, pulling the strings from midfield while Nolito and Morata were clinical in front of goal, enjoying the fruits of their midfielder’s labour.

Such was the staggering nature of their midfield’s passing display, Gerard Pique was the only player who was not involved in the play before his side’s third goal. A goal which came 21 passes later, a sign that Spain should not be overlooked as major contenders for the crown on July 10.
