SASoccermag selects the Premier League Team of the Week as Chelsea duo Eden Hazard and N’Golo Kante led Chelsea to a 4-0 win over Manchester United.
Team of the Week formation: 4-3-3
Goalkeeper: Victor Valdes (Middlesbrough)
Valdes produced probably his best performance in the Premier League since his ill-fated move from Barcelona, as the former Manchester United reserve made an array of stunning saves to deny Arsenal a full complement of points on Saturday. Showing superb reflexes, the Spaniard dominated his penalty area to great effect, earning himself a clean sheet.
Left Back: Christian Fuchs (Leicester City)
Fuchs faced the unenviable task of shackling Crystal’s Palace’s electric wing Wilfried Zaha, but proved more than capable of handling the star as he matched him in both pace and power. Always alert and using his experience to good effect, the defender also chipped in with a superb goal as he fired home spectacularly from long range to seal an important victory.
Centre Back: Winston Reid (West Ham United)
West Ham United continued to battle a run of woeful form as Winston Reid emerged the unlikely hero for the Hammers against rock-bottom side Sunderland. Solid at the back despite an indifferent display by the Hammers further forward, Reid almost singlehandedly earned his side the three points as he fired home from long range in the dying minutes of the game.
Centre Back: Gary Cahill (Chelsea)
Cahill bounced back from a string of poor performances of late as he produced a resolute display at the back for Chelsea, completely negating the impact of Manchester United’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The English defender also turned in his side’s crucial second goal as he reacted quickly to a ricochet in the box to fire home and severely dent United’s morale.
Right Back: Nathaniel Clyne (Liverpool)
Clyne continued to offer what he has offered Liverpool all season – excellent defending, tidy play in possession, and mobility. The defender capably handled all West Bromwich Albion threw at him down the Reds’ right flank, while he charged forward to good effect when Liverpool were in control of the ball.
Centre Midfield: N’Golo Kante (Chelsea)
Kante was at his very best as Chelsea ran riot against Manchester United on Sunday. Marauding up and down the midfield, the star suffocated United’s play with ease, picking passes at will and driving the Chelsea side forward. Kante also put the icing on the cake for his side when he netted the outfit’s fourth, easing through United’s defence before finding the far corner.
Centre Midfield: Danny Drinkwater (Leicester City)
Drinkwater was back to his inspirational best at the heart of the Foxes’ midfield as he helped dictate play in the middle of the park, creating numerous opportunities for his side. The midfielder’s high intensity and ability to quickly pick out Leicester’s attacking players with his range of passing was an essential ingredient in what was their best performance of the season.
Centre Midfield: Idrissa Gueye (Everton)
Gueye was a rare bright spark for Everton as he impressed for the Toffees despite the side’s disappointing defeat at the hands of Burnley. Energetic and decisive in midfield, Gueye was essential in breaking up play and pushing his side on to the front foot. Having played a hand in the side’s goal, he was unlucky to be sacrificed as Everton pushed for an equaliser.
Left Wing: Eden Hazard (Chelsea)
Hazard gave Daley Blind all sorts of problems down the left flank as United struggled to cope with the wing’s lively movement and confident play in possession. The Belgian also popped up with his side’s third goal of the game as he darted in behind the United defence, danced half a yard out of Chris Smalling, and slid the ball beyond the despairing David de Gea.
Right Wing: Xherdan Shaqiri (Stoke City)
Shaqiri illustrated his world-class potential once again on Saturday as he netted a sublime brace to lead Stoke City to victory over the struggling Hull City Tigers. The former Bayern Munich star smashed home his first from outside the box before firing in an excellent free kick to double his and his side’s tally.
Striker: Shinji Okazaki (Leicester City)
Okazaki may have missed a great chance with a chipped effort early on but responded well as he led the line for Leicester in the absence of Jamie Vardy. Often dropping deep to help link up play, the Japanese constantly caused problems up front with his relentless movement and great strength, while he also netted an excellent goal.
