Turkey faced off against the Czech Republic on Tuesday as Mehmet Topal proved key to securing a 2-0 victory for the Turks. 

Despite the early goal for Turkey it was the Czech Republic that bossed the majority of the first half, according to SASoccermag’s Opta-powered match stats.

Although the possession stats read 50 percent apiece at the break, the Czechs hit eight shots to Turkey’s three in the first-half. Crucially, however, Turkey scored with their only effort on target.

The momentum swung in favour of Turkey during the second period as they made light work of Czech attacks before adding a second goal. By full time they had recorded nine shots to the Czechs’ 13.

The key player for the Turks on the night was Mehmet Topal. The 30-year-old defensive midfielder was pivotal in helping his side soak up Czech pressure as he made 52 touches over the course of the match. The player completed 29 of his 34 passes, and also made a remarkable 15 clearances.

Topal also assisted Turkey’s second goal on the night as he coolly layed-off the ball following a free-kick.
