Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira believes a lack of steel within Arsenal’s squad could prohibit them from lifting the Premier League title.

Vieira, who formally captained the side and won three Premier League titles with the club between 1995 and 2005, believes the current crop fall short of the standards set by the side’s famous Invincibles squad.

It is the failure to match that side’s physicality and leadership attributes which has cost the club dear in recent seasons, Viera claims.

‘My generation had lots of physically strong players,’ Vieira told The Telegraph. ‘In the last five or six years, Arsenal went with more of this type of technical players. The Invicibles had it all.

‘Now when I watch Arsenal, they play good football, but I just have a feeling they are missing something – the physical presence, the personality.’

Arsene Wenger has led Arsenal to two FA Cup wins in the last three years, but not since the 2004-05 unbeaten season has the side sustained their challenge and actually claimed the title.

‘The team is not doing as well as it used to and you need to win football matches. They’ve been disappointing, losing games they should have won,’ Viera added.

Arsenal have had a poor start to the league as a loss to Liverpool was followed up with a goalless draw away to Leicester.

The side will have a chance to bounce back when they face Watford away at Vicarage Road on Sunday.
