Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has expressed his disappointment following a narrow 4-3 loss at the hands of Liverpool on Sunday.

The Gunners looked in complete control of the game leading 1-0 with five minutes till the interval, but the match was turned on its head in the dying minutes of the opening period as a stunning Coutinho free kick lifted the Reds for the second-half.

Arsenal quickly saw themselves facing a 4-1 deficit, then did well to battle back to 4-3, but ultimately fell short of matching the Reds’ efforts.

‘Of course we are bitterly disappointed,’ Wenger told Arsenal’s website. ‘It was a contrast between the two halves. We lost this game for many reasons and was one of them is Liverpool making it 1-1 just before half-time.’

The manager, who is without a raft of first team players given injuries coupled with the late return of players from Euro 2016, admitted the side was also in poor physical condition.

‘Maybe we lacked a bit of experience but if you look well at the goals, I don’t think it was necessarily the inexperienced players that cost us the goals today,’ Wenger added.

Arsenal started with a Callum Chambers and Rob Holding centre back pairing following injuries to all three senior stars Gabriel Paulista, Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny.

The Gunners will have a chance to bounce back when they face champions Leicester City on Saturday.

The match will be played at the King Power Stadium.
