Jose Mourinho has taken the bold step of making the club’s new signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic the vice-captain of Manchester United.

Ibrahimovic, who has yet to make his competitive debut for the Red Devils, recently arrived at the club on a free transfer from PSG and is well known by Mourinho from the pair’s time together at Inter Milan.

The iconic forward has previously captained both PSG and his national side, while he will captain now captain United should Wayne Rooney be absent.

‘Some of the other lads, especially the young ones, are in awe of Zlatan. He brings a presence to the place and people look up to him after everything that he has achieved through his career,’ a source told The Sun.

‘He has experience at the highest level and is seen as an obvious captain when the other lads aren’t on the pitch.’

Ibrahimovic netted 47 goals in just 41 matches for PSG and is expected to compete for the starting berth against prodigy Marcus Rashford.

The Red Devils will be back in competitive action on Sunday when they face Premier League champions Leicester City in the Community Shield.

The fixture will be played at Wembley Stadium. Kick-off is at 17:00.
