Carling Black Label Champion Cup general manager Vijay Govindsamy has announced that 50 000 tickets for the pre-season contest have been sold.
The exhibition game, which pits rivals Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates off against one another using players selected by the fans, is set to take place for the sixth time next month.
‘The Carling Cup is a very unique concept which is about fans being the coach,’ Govindsamy said speaking live from South African Breweries on Thursday.
‘The Carling Cup is possible only through the support of two great clubs of Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs,’ he continued.
‘When we launched the cup this year we wanted to make sure as many fans know about it and till today we still want to make sure that fans realise that this is not a normal derby between Chiefs and Pirates. This is a derby that is driven by fans … they are the coach … they decided the starting line-up … and they get to influence live substitutions after the first half.’
Govindsamy has encouraged fans to purchase tickets for the match. With approximately 50 000 sold only another 40 000 remain.
‘We all know that fans wake up last minute to buy their tickets. What we really encourage fans is to go out and secure your ticket because it is going to be sold out.’
The match will be played at FNB Stadium on July 30.
