Ajax Cape Town have confirmed that they have reached a mutual agreement with both Ali Abondo and Joaquim Lupeta to release them from their current contracts at the club.
Abondo was signed at the end last season by former coach Roger de Sa and featured in three games for the Urban Warriors but the midfielder is yet to make his official appearance for the club this season due to injury.
Ajax CEO Ari Efstathiou believes that Abondo has been unfortunate at the club after an injury kept him sidelined for most of his time at the club but he insists that it’s in the best interest for the club to release the midfielder.
‘Abondo has been extremely unfortunate with injury and now has strong competition for his play-making position in the middle of the park, especially after the signing of Zambian international Roderick Kabwe which will see him down the pecking order if he stayed,’ Efstathiou told the Ajax Cape Town website.
‘Coach Stanley Menzo also believes it is in Abondo’s best interest that the club allows him to leave.’
Efstathiou has revealed that Lupeta wants game time but faced stiff competition from Nathan Paulse and Prince Nxumalo but insists that the striker will part ways with the club when his contract expires in June.
‘Lupeta wants game time and he is unlikely to get much of that with the form both Paulse and Nxumalo are showing in attack,’ He added.
‘His contract finishes at the end of June and after discussions with him he has decided to leave because he wants to play more. He is heading back to Portugal.’
With Abondo and Lupeta leaving the club, the Urban Warriors has now freed up more place for the five allowed foreigner positions in the team.
