SuperSport United coach Stuart Baxter was pleased by his side’s turnaround to win 2-0 against Bidvest Wits at the Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday.
Matsatsantsa clinched the victory through goals by Clayton Daniels and Thabo Mnyamne, to move above Wits on the Absa Premiership table.
According to Baxter, though, they initially performed poorly and were disorganised going forward, which motivated the Students to hit back.
‘I thought our first half was miserable. We got a semblance of organisation in our attacking play. When you play a team like Wits, you can’t give them the sort of momentum that they can build on,’ Baxter said after the match.
‘They are a difficult team to play against when you give them that and in the first half, they had far too much momentum – knocking balls into the box that we had to defend from all angles.’
However, the Scottish tactician believes Matsatsantsa’s attacking presence improved in the second half with reward coming in the 64th and 70th minutes.
‘I just think that we did a better job in the second half of defusing it and having better attacking play and being a threat to them, so that they were struggling to get at us and I think it was just a much better second half.’
SuperSport United next take on Bloemfontein Celtic in the Absa Premiership on Sunday.
The match at the Dr Molemela Stadium kicks off at 15:30.
