Mamelodi Sundowns were crowned champions of the Dr Hage Geingob Cup for a record third time after defeating Tigers FC on Sunday.

The PSL champions beat rivals Orlando Pirates in the semi-finals before a 4-2 win over Namibian champions, Tigers FC, helped them clinch the Dr Hage Geingob Cup.

Khama Billiat was instrumental once again as he provided three assists on the night. Ntandoyenkosi Ngubane, on as an early substitute for Anthony Laffor, handed his side the lead after Sibusiso Vilakazi provided the key pass before the Brazilians were hit on the break by the impressive Namibian outfit.

Hlompho Kekana sent his side into the lead once again after striking home following a Billiat free kick before the Zimbabwe ace set up Leonardo Castro shortly before the break to restore his side’s lead. Eric Ntlaba made sure of a successful trip to Namibia when he put the result beyond doubt.

Billiat believes his side’s thorough preparation is crucial to laying the foundation for positive results.

‘We never underestimate any of our opponents. We prepare thoroughly and do our match analysis regardless of the opposition. The same amount of work that was put in preparing for Orlando Pirates was the same when we were preparing for final against Tigers FC,’ Billiat said after the match.

Billiat was also full of praise for the Namibian side, Tigers FC for giving Sundowns a tough match.

‘Tigers were not an easy side because they made us sweat for the victory. Whenever we thought we had them they came right back, which is a sign of a strong team. Besides, we were up against the reigning Namibian League champions.’

The Zimbabwean international had a great game in the final and worked tirelessly in creating goal-scoring opportunities and even winning the ball for his teammates. Billiat also stressed the importance of teamwork and was full of praise for his teammates, new and old.

‘I get very excited when the team plays well and get the results, even if I don’t score. For me having a good game and contributing positively is all that matters.

‘There’s a lot to be excited about at Sundowns, apart from defending the Hage Geingob Cup, the team is playing well and the team chemistry is growing match by match. Even when there are new players being introduced in the setup, the understanding amongst players is consistent.’

Sundowns next match is an away trip to Enyimba in the Caf Champions League on August 23.
