Cape Town City have secured their spot in the MTN8 semi-finals after defeating Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 in the quarter-finals at the Cape Town Stadium on Friday.

Eric Tinkler side had the first opportunity of the match in the fifth minute when Bongolethu Jayiya sent a free kick into the Amakhosi box, but no one could get on the end of it and Itumeleng Khune was on hand to collect the ball.

However, Matt Sim netted in as early as the seventh minute, chipping an on-rushing Itumeleng Khune from inside the box, after being picked out by Bongolwethu Jayiya’s cross.

A minute later Lewis Macha produced Chiefs’ first shot on target as he headed goalwards but was denied by City goalkeeper Shu-Aib Walters.

Amakhosi came close to finding an equaliser in the 32nd minute as Tsepo Masilela swung a cross into the City penalty area and Aubrey Modiba almost headed it past his own goalkeeper, but Walters did well to save the ball.

City piled the pressure on last season’s finalist in the 38th minute when a poor touch from defender Ramahlwe Mphahlele almost gifted Lebogang Manyama with a great chance to extend City’s lead.

Ten minutes into the second-half Jayiya had a chance at goal but saw his shot from range palmed away by the Amakhosi shot-stopper.

Just after 60 minutes of play, Chiefs who were on the attack when Macha latched onto a cross at the far post but he sent his shot wide of goal.

At the other end, Austrian midfielder Roland Putsche had a great opportunity to score City’s second when Aubrey Ngoma picked him out but he missed the target and the chance to extend their lead.

Chiefs piled on the pressure on City in the latter stages of the match, forcing Walters into making a few top quality saves, while William Twala hit the woodwork but the visiting side failed to find their leveller.

Cape Town City held on to a 1-0 victory over Kaizer Chiefs at the Cape Town Stadium to secure their spot in the semi-finals of the MTN8 tournament.
