Former Al Ahly assistant coach Cavin Johnson has revealed that he would happily return to the Egyptian giants in the future.

Johnson was appointed as an assistant coach to countryman Pitso Mosimane when he joined the Red Eagles in October 2020, but left the club at the end of the season after helping them secure back-to-back Caf Champions League titles as well as the bronze medal in the Fifa Club World Cup.

The former Black Leopards coach has been out of a job since parting ways with Al Ahly after spending just less than a year with the African giants.

The South African coach spoke about his stint with the Red Eagles to the ONTime Sports TV channel.

“My time with Al Ahly was wonderful, I worked with a professional team and it added to my experience; Al Ahly is an African icon,” Johnson said.

“Sometimes a strong relationship comes to an end, that’s what happened. If a chance avails itself I would happily return to Al Ahly.”

The 63-year-old added that Ahly are very strong this campaign, especially after the arrival of former PSL stars Luís Miquissone and Percy Tau.

“Al Ahly are very strong this season, during last season they were strong but this year they are even better. I wasn’t surprised to see Al Ahly winning against Zamalek with five goals,” he added.

“Miquissone and Percy Tau are very good players, I wish them the best of luck with Al Ahly.

“Working under the guidance of Mahmoud El-Khatib is one of the best things in my career; he doesn’t speak a lot but he’s always there for the team, and when he speaks, his words have an encouraging effect.

“El-Khatib was one of Africa’s best players, him being Al Ahly president reflects the club’s ideals, he knows how to lead the club to the summit.

“I hope he stays in his position [club president] for 10 more years, he’s brilliant, I haven’t met anyone like him in Egypt.

“I’d like to thank Al Ahly fans for always supporting me while I was with the team, I am sure they push the club forward, especially now that they are allowed in the stadium.”
