Kaizer Chiefs were over-reliant on set plays as they accounted for a reported 58 percent of their goals in the 2015-16 Premiership season.

The Glamour Boys had a torrid season last term as they failed to acquire any silverware, while they also finished outside of the top four for the first time since 2011-12, reports SoccerLaduma. 

The back four conceded more than double the goals they let in the previous term (30 as opposed to 14), but it was the side’s inability to score goals that held the side back most of all, as they recorded just a single win in their final 13 games across all competitions.

It was Chiefs’ inability to score from open play which was their most pressing concern. Though they netted an impressive 22 goals off set plays, that figure accounted for more than half of their total 38 strikes.

Penalties kicks aside, Chiefs scored 16 goals as the result of free-kicks and corners. Though impressive, that figure accounted for more than double their tally from open play.

Coach Steve Komphela will be desperate to improve the side’s build-up play in the 2016-17 season, while he will be eager to maintain the side’s impressive set piece statistics.
