Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs went head-to-head in the sixth edition of the Carling Black Label Champion Cup  on Saturday, with Chiefs emerging the victors. 

The pre-season showpiece, which pits the local rivals against one another fielding players voted for by fans of the sides, had previously been won by the Buccaneers on four occasions, with the Amakhosi tasting glory just once.

The win 2-0 win for Chiefs at the FNB Stadium means the side has recorded its second success in the contest.

The match got off to a tense start as both sides looked to move the ball around quickly in midfield. Neither side was able to make significant inroads behind the opponent’s defence, however, as the opening quarter-hour proved cagey.

With the Amakhosi slowly beginning to dominate possession, the first shot was produced by Kgotso Moleko, who miscued after 19 minutes.

Chiefs almost had a great chance just after the half-hour mark as Hendrick Ekstein and Bernard Parker exchanged passes, but the danger was cut out by Brighton Mhlongo.

With the Pirates attack proving blunted by the Chiefs defence, Mpho Makola tried a shot from distance, but it was easily gathered by Itumeleng Khune with 37 minutes played.

There was time for one final effort from Parker before the break, but the shot proved tame as the sides headed into the interval level at 0-0.

The second half got off to a fast start as William Twala threatened with an effort for Chiefs. Pirates then had a chance of their own as Thabo Rakhale did well to deliver a cross that flew millimetres beyond Thamsanqa Gabuza in front of goal with 51 minutes played.

Chiefs finally took a deserved lead in the 58th minute as Eric Mathoho out a Parker shot into the net following a Parker effort which struck the bar.

Chiefs continued to press on after the goal and Tsepo Masilela came close for the Amakhosi just after the hour mark. 10 minutes later Tendai Ndoro almost level the scores against the run of play, but an excellent Khune save was enough to deny him.

Mathoho was on hand to dramatically clear the ball of the line after 81 minutes following a close range effort from Bucs striker Bernard Morrison, thereby preserving the Amakhosi’s lead.

Chiefs grabbed a late second through Luis Macha following great work from Twala. It was enough to ensure they triumphed by a 2-0 scoreline.
