Mamelodi Sundowns defender Rivaldo Coetzee has reportedly suffered an injury setback in the build-up to his side’s Caf Champions League game against Wydad Casablanca, and is now also a doubt for Bafana Bafana.
The defender received a call-up to the national side from Stuart Baxter after missing out for some time through a lengthy injury.
He has been back fit for Downs for a while, however, and has impressed with some quality displays.
The Bafana Bafana international looks set to miss his side’s game against Wydad, as he reportedly suffered a setback with his troublesome foot injury during Sundowns’ training camp in Morocco ahead of their final group fixture.
According to a report by KickOff.com, the Downs’ doctors have advised Mosimane and co to rest the defender for the game in order to ensure his availability for the national side.
‘Rivaldo did a check-up with the club after he was struggling with his foot injury, it’s not something hectic, but he won’t feature tomorrow,’ a source told KickOff.com.
Coetzee’s injury troubles have been well-documented after he joined the Chloorkop-based club in the 2017-18 season. He slotted in only after his high-profile move to Glasgow Celtic in Scotland fell through due to a failed medical.
Downs coach Pitso Mosimane has spoken about his injury troubles throughout the current campaign and has stressed caution over what he calls a top-class talent.
‘We can do nothing, we have to wait, he’s kicking a little bit, he’s touching the ball, but still complains about pain. Sometimes he is okay, but I feel sorry [for him], what a talent,’ Mosimane said back in late August.
‘I told him that he needs to pray a lot, maybe these things can change, you never know. If you guys know anyone who can help, support. We will put him on any flight in the world to get him better.’
Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter will undoubtedly be in touch with the Downs medical staff as he looks to plan for his side’s crunch Afcon qualifier against Libya, which is set to take place on 24 March.
