Amajita coach Owen Da Gama believes that Maritzburg United midfielder Deolin Mekoa is capable of impressing at any side currently plying its trade in the Premiership.
Mekoa has attracted interest from the likes of Mamelodi Sundowns of late and also made his Bafana Bafana debut on Saturday as the side claimed a penalty shootout victory over Lesotho in the Cosafa Cup quarter-finals. Mekoa, indeed, struck the wining penalty.
Da Gama is confident of the player’s quality in spite of his club’s struggles in the Premiership this term.
‘You can never judge a player about the performance of his team but you judge him by his performance,’ Da Gama told KickOff.
‘As you know we cannot just change the whole team but you got to have continuity and we just had to strengthen him. He’s the player that has done very well at U23 level and he took his performance to his club.’
The Bafana squad was filled with predominantly U23 stars for the Lesotho clash as the country bids to warm-up for the Rio 2016 Olympics.
‘I’ve always said that he can play for any PSL team and there is no doubt about it, any PSL team,’ Da Gama clarified.
Mekoa made 28 appearances for Maritzburg in all competitions this term, finding the back of the net twice and assisting a further four.
