Ajax Cape Town coach Roger de Sa believes one silly error cost his side the match following their 1-0 defeat against SuperSport United in the Telkom Knockout Cup.
An extra-time goal by Matsatsantsa striker Thuso Phala proved to be the difference in the weather-affected match at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville.
The match had to be suspended for 38 minutes in the first half of extra time, with the wind and heavy rain causing all sorts of chaos within the stadium.
However, the two teams returned to the field following an inspection by the referee and match commissioner with Ajax unable to find the all-important equalising goal as the match ended 1-0 in favour of Matsatsantsa.
The 52-year-old coach believes one mistake cost them the match, but insists that both sides were evenly matched throughout.
‘The guys tried and worked hard. It were difficult conditions, no doubt for both teams,’ De Sa told the Ajax Cape Town website.
‘One silly error, I thought, and we gave the goal away. There wasn’t much in it. Both teams were pretty evenly matched, but that’s the way it goes.’
De Sa added that his side did not create enough clear-cut chances in front of goal, but he will be hoping that the Urban Warriors can bounce back when they welcome Bidvest Wits to the Cape Town Stadium on Wednesday.
‘I don’t think we created too many chances, they were pretty sound at the back. Our creativity wasn’t the best, I thought we lacked a little bit.
‘Once or twice we got in the box and so on. I thought Prince (Nxumalo) had a very good chance in the first half. It was probably the best chance of the game, obviously not counting the last few minutes when we were chasing the game.
‘But apart from that, I thought it was pretty even throughout, but that’s the way it goes. We just gotta try and recover from this and hopefully get it back on track Wednesday.’
Ajax Cape Town against Bidvest Wits kicks off at 19:30.
