Former Ajax Cape Town star Enoh Eyong has opened up about his trip to Amsterdam, where his Standard Liege side face Ajax Amsterdam in the Europa League.

The Cameroonian midfielder, who was once close to being awarded the Premier Soccer League’s Player of the Season gong, made his name at Ajax Cape Town before opting to join the club’s Dutch counterpart back in 2008.

‘I will have mixed feelings before the kick-off,’ the 30-year-old told KickOff.

‘On the one hand I’m glad to go back to the club that gave me my first chance in Europe but on the other hand, I’d honestly prefer not to have to try and beat the team where I played with my whole heart for five seasons.’

Eyong made 33 appearances for Ajax Cape Town, scoring one goal in his time at the club. At Ajax Amsterdam he went on to make a further 149 appearances before linking up with Fulham in England.

‘I don’t know what reception I’ll get from the fans but in any case I’ll be happy to see them because I felt I had a good relationship with them. It will be great to be back in Amsterdam, where three of my five sons were born – numbers three, four and five!

‘The other two were in South Africa and Cameroon,’ he concluded.

The clash between Ajax and Liege will be played at the Amsterdam Arena.

Kick-off is at 19:00.
