Fleetwood Town have officially announced that the club’s first team will be heading to Cape Town for a pre-season tour this summer.

The Cod Army will play two matches against Premier Soccer League (PSL) clubs on Saturday, 11 and Tuesday, 14 July ahead of the 2020-21 campaign.

Joey Barton’s squad will be based at the Stellenbosch University campus, home of elite sport in South Africa.

The club have linked up with Cape Town-based company DBC International, who are the official tour partners for the trip, and will also feature as shirt sponsors for a specially commissioned tour kit.

As part of the tour, the club’s Community Trust will be running outreach football sessions and creating legacy health and well-being programmes for children in Cape Town.

The club will also play an integral part in a wider business events, supporting both local and UK government initiatives in driving private investment in Southern Africa.

Fleetwood Town chairman Andy Pilley said: ‘I am thrilled to confirm that Fleetwood Town will be heading to Cape Town this summer.

‘South Africa is a country that is close to my heart, having initially visited it on personal trips and is now an integral part of my wider day- to-day business operations.

‘The beauty of Cape Town is well documented as one the world’s best cities to visit, and tomorrow we will be announcing a package where supporters will be able to join us in this truly remarkable part of the world.’
