Maritzburg United midfielder Denis Weidlich says the Team of Choice are training hard in preparation for the upcoming season.

At the recent press conference held by Maritzburg United, thirteen new players were revealed, one of them Denis Weidlich, a one-time Arsenal trialist signed from Holstein Kiel in Germany, reports the Maritzburg United website.

The former Holstein Kiel defender says that this season the Team of Choice will be hoping to achieve more that just securing their Absa Premiership status, while also stating that they will be hoping to win over the club’s supporters.

‘I think this season we have a different target. We don’t just want to stay in the league, we’ll try and play good football and get points for our supporters,’ Weidlich said.

The 30-year-old insists he is optimistic ahead of the new season because of what he has seen at training during the pre-season.

‘Training is going very well. We are training very hard. We are progressing and it’s looking very good. The coach keeps telling us that even if we score one goal, it is important that we keep concentration for 90 minutes until the referee blows the whistle,’ he added.

Over the course of his career, Weidlich has made a total of 302 appearances playing for the likes of German side’s Hansa Rostock, Holstein Kiel, Jahn Regensburg, Rot-Weib Erfurt, Babelsberg 03, Wilhelmshaven, and Hamburg, netting 18 goals and creating 17 assists.
