Former Mamelodi Sundowns captain Hlompho Kekana has defended the Brazilians by stating that their January signings are not luxury signings.
The Brazilians signed four players during the January transfer window, including Thembinkosi Lorch, Matias Esquivel, Zuko Mdunyelwa, and Tashreeq Matthews.
The Sundowns legend has since come to the defense of his former by and feels their recruits are justified signings.
“In a football match, you don’t know what you’re going to get, especially in the second round of the season, so you need a lot of flexibility in terms of your attack,” said Kekana as per SABC Sport.
“I did mention that they know at Mamelodi Sundowns, that there’s players who already establish themselves and they know how the team plays.
“You can’t always rely on one player, which is Peter Shalulile, to score goals for us, and I think you saw, when Peter is not there, Mamelodi Sundowns is not the Mamelodi Sundowns that we know, especially going forward,” he explained.
“To bring players that can play two or three positions will help in terms of attack, and I think we can sit here and think, ‘maybe [Sundowns] didn’t need them,’ but it will be proven in a football match that’s still coming.
“So, I think it’s for us to sit back and watch how it will unfold.”
