Bafana Bafana captain and goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has insisted he seeks to draw the positives from criticism.

Khune’s addition to South Africa’s Rio 2016 drew ire from some quarters, despite the goalkeeper’s leadership skills and experience.

The player illustrated his importance in South Africa’s opening game against Brazil on Thursday, however, as a series of stunning saves proved crucial in ensuring the side kept the star-studded Brazilians at bay.

‘I am not discouraged by critics,’ Khune told Safa.net following the final whistle.

‘Instead, they motivate me to perform even better. I am a professional and I turn every negative into a positive.’

The Kaizer Chiefs star has credited his side’s teamwork as they surprised many critics by holding the tournament favourites.

‘The atmosphere was electrifying, but it is normal for us as most of us in the Olympic team play to these numbers and higher like in the Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates just last weekend,’ he added.

The goalkeeper also expressed his delight at the way in which his defenders kept Brazil superstar Neymar quiet while declaring his side had now turned their attention towards their next game.

South Africa will next face Denmark at the Mane Garrincha Stadium on Sunday night.
