Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela has opened up about Daniel Cardoso’s first start of the season, heaping praise on the star.
Cardoso was deployed in a central defensive role alongside Lorenzo Gordinho following the absence of regular starter Erick Mathoho, who was granted compassionate leave following the loss of his brother.
There, Cardoso impressed, helping to contain opposition striker Nathan Paulse as Chiefs coasted to a convincing 2-0 victory over Ajax Cape Town.
‘I thought Cardoso and Gordinho did very well,’ Komphela told KickOff.
‘There are actually three strikers in South Africa that will give you that kind of [aerial] challenge. It’s [Henrico] Botes, Nathan Paulse and Eleazar Rodgers and you know when you are playing with them it’s not going to be easy.’
Komphela explained that to combat a player of Paulse’s quality it was essential for his defenders to win individual battles.
‘You’ve got the centre-back who must be ready to go for them, winning those aerial battles and balls on the ground. But it was not the only strength of Ajax and they can also play. That is why it was such an exciting match.’
While it remains unclear whether or not Mathoho will be available for selection ahead of Chiefs’ Telkom Knockout clash with Maritzburg United this weekend, Cardoso may be asked to continue in the role.
The match will be played at the FNB Stadium on Saturday, with kick-off at 20:15.
