Kaizer Chiefs boss Steve Komphela has opened up about the difficulties of securing results within a high-pressure environment.
Komphela explained he takes a calm and modest approach to his role as coach, employing an analogy to illustrate his point.
‘I don’t see myself driving slow, we may take the same street. If you drive too slow it might end up moving towards an element of complacence or arrogance, if you are driving too fast you will crash,’ Komphela told KickOff.
The coach explained he finds it important to maintain a consistent temperament owing to the pressures of the job and that this, in turn, benefits his management of the side.
‘When you understand the challenge ahead then you can cope with ease and deal with the pressure. The wins should not make you feel like now you need to fly in as much as you celebrate.
‘Losses as well, you don’t then have to become an ostrich were you put your head underneath the sand, now you don’t habit. That is when you need to come up because you have wonderful players to inspire when results are not forthcoming.’
Komphela noted pressure could manifest both internally and externally at a club having experienced it first hand following a difficult conclusion to last season.
‘But when there is pressure from outside then we come together and get stronger,’ he concluded.
Chiefs currently top the Premiership standings with 13 points from six matches.
