Mamelodi Sundowns secured their place in the Caf Champions League final following their 3-2 aggregate victory over Zesco United at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday.
Pitso Mosimane’s side came into their second leg encounter trailing following their 2-1 defeat in the first leg of the African tournament.
The Brazilians got off to the perfect start, breaking the deadlock as early as the fifth minute when Keagan Dolly’s cross was cleared into the path of Downs striker Anthony Laffor, who volleyed home from close range to give Sundowns a 1-0 lead.
The visitors had an opportunity to level matters in the 17th minute when Jackson Mwanza’s effort hitting the crossbar.
In the opening 25 minutes, Khama Billiat looked threatening after his shot flew narrowly wide of the upright.
Sundowns had a great opportunity to extend their lead 10 minutes later, however, Zesco goalkeeper Banda was on hand to deny Dolly from close range.
The Brazilians started the second half off brightly as Billiat and Dolly continued to threaten the Zesco goal, but chances were hard to come by.
Sundowns eventually doubled their lead in the 63rd minute when Percy Tau’s header from close range extended his side’s lead to 2-0.
Sundowns suffered a major blow when Tiyani Mabunda was stretchered off the field in the closing stages of the match, but managed to hold on to their 2-0 lead and 3-2 aggregate score to secure their spot in the final.
