Kaizer Chiefs defender Erick Mathoho has traveled to Johannesburg to undergo a scan on the ankle he injured at Rio 2016.
The 26-year-old was ruled out of his side’s final group game of the competition after picking up the injury in South Africa’s 1-0 defeat at the hands of Denmark, despite having worn a protective boot prior to the injury
The player now looks doubtful to be fit ahead of his side’s opening game of the season against Bidvest Wits next Wednesday, reports SoccerLaduma.
Though the Glamour Boys will likely miss their star defender, the will rest assured knowing they have more than sufficient cover in the position, with the likes of Ramahlwe Mphahlele, Lorenzo Gordinho, Siyanda Xulu and Daniel Cardoso all options to fill the void left by Mathoho.
Mathoho was a key player for the Amakhosi last season as he made 36 appearances in all competitions and chipped in with a remarkable five goals.
His side will have to cope without him for the clash at Bidvest Stadium on August 23.Kick-off is at 19:30.
