Former Bafana Bafana star Fabian McCarthy has backed former clubs Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns to deliver this season.
McCarthy has been impressed by the Amakhosi’s transfer acquisitions ahead of the new season while he has also praised the depth of the Sundowns squad as they look to defend their title.
‘I have watched the new Kaizer Chiefs signings in action and they seem to have the discipline to excel for the club,’ McCarthy told KickOff.
‘Chiefs will definitely want to win the league because of the status of the club. While they have the kind of players capable of bringing success to the club, much will depend on how they will gel in as a unit,’ he added.
The former defender, now 39-years of age, is also excited by the prospect of the Brazilians’ attacking play.
‘They have done well in the Caf Champions League and it will be great to see how that international form will play out during the domestic matches,’ McCarthy added.
Chiefs are up against Bidvest Wits at the Bidvest Stadium on Tuesday evening in what will be their opening match of the season. The action gets underway from 19:30.
Meanwhile, Sundowns will only begin the defence of their league title in September owing to their owning Caf commitments. Their first clash is against Maritzburg United at the Harry Gwala Stadium, with a kick-off set for 19:30.
