Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Fabian McCarthy believes that Bafana Bafana star Ramahlwe Mphahlele is best suited to the right back slot he now occupies.
The defender, formally the captain of Mamelodi Sundowns, has predominately played at centre back in recent seasons but has now been asked to return to the right back position at Chiefs.
‘Look, I think for me Rama is on the right side, that’s his position. He knows how to play there. He played there more than he has played as a centre-back,’ McCarthy told Goal .
‘I don’t believe in Rama being a centre back because he is one that wants to go forward. He wants to bring in crosses and join the attack,’ McCarthy explained.
The former Chiefs star believes centre backs require good positioning and must hold back from joining in on attacks.
‘If you play in the centre of defence your positioning is very important. How you are going to move as well. You can’t just run and connect with the midfielders and go forward as you please,’ he stressed.
McCarthy concluded that Rama is better suited to the freedom of the right back slot, where is feels most comfortable.
Chiefs are currently top of the Premiership table following their 2-0 over Free State Stars on Wednesday.
