Orlando Pirates were knocked out of the Nedbank Cup by Cape Town City after losing 1-0 at the Cape Town Stadium on Wednesday evening, writes DEAN WORKMAN.

The Buccaneers were hoping to progress to the quarter-finals of the Nedbank Cup, continuing their chase for silverware. Benni McCarthy’s team, however, had other ideas and despite Milutin Sredojevic’s men dominating large parts of the encounter, it is City who will be in the hat for the next round.

After the disappointing result, the Pirates coach was quick to apologise to the fans, saying, ‘I’m very sorry to the supporters because we really wanted to win,’ he said.

‘The boys gave their best, but unfortunately, our best today was not good enough. The effort was there and the result should not put us down because we are in the process of building the team. We need to pick the pieces up and be strong for the next game in the league on Saturday,’ added Sredojevic.

‘There are small details from the game today that are negative that we need to correct. There are so many things that are good that we need to upgrade and make it better.

‘When you are in football there is no logic that you will win everything. Unfortunately, this match was so important to us, and it is a huge step back to us but we need to pick up the pieces and to show that today was really unfortunate.’

Orlando Pirates will be looking to bounce back from this defeat when they travel to Durban to take on Golden Arrows on Saturday. City will turn their attention to the draw for the Nedbank Cup quarter-finals which will take place on Thursday evening in Cape Town.
