Maritzburg United coach Ernst Middendorp has resigned from his position as head coach of the club following the team’s recent run of results.
The Team of Choice currently sit ninth on the Absa Premiership table with two wins, four draws, and four defeats after 10 matches this season.
The German tactician has revealed that he did the honourable thing by resigning from his post as head coach of the club to avoid damaging the club and protect its brand.
‘Circumstances put us in a disadvantage and as such we lost critical points that would see us on a much better position on the log by now. It was very difficult to continue under such circumstances, Middendorp told the Maritzburg United website.
‘I then approached the Chairman and persuaded him to release me from the contract for the sake of avoiding damage to the club and to protect the brand.
The 58-year-old has also revealed that the club’s chairman Farook Kadodia persuade the German to remain at the club and finish his two-year contract with the club.
‘I indicated that after the Cape Town assignment, I would resign. The Chairman tried very hard to persuade me to stay and complete what i had started,’ he added.
‘But I felt very strongly that it is in the interest of the club that I step down because with me in the equation, it would be difficult to experience a different situation on the field than what we had experienced already. I had to remove myself from the equation.’
The club also announced that assistant coach Fadlu Davids will be in charge until further notice.
