Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp is very pleased to have Khama Billiat back, but he will not overstretch the Zimbabwean by slowly building him up.
Billiat returned from a long absence in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Royale Eagles in the Nedbank Cup.
The former Mamelodi Sundowns forward showed glimpses of his quality in the victory after being six weeks off.
With Chiefs flying at the top of the table, Middendorp and his backroom staff decided to rest Billiat in December after judging him to be fatigued after a busy period for both club and country.
With the 29-year-old back among his options, the German coach admits he will reap the benefits of his lengthy break.
‘We are definitely very‚ very pleased to have Khama [back]. That was our intention taking him out from December 22‚ and taking him out for a long time‚’ Middendorp said.
‘And you can now see. He has a good touch‚ he’s sprinting 100%.
‘But, on the other side‚ being out for such a long time‚ don’t over-stretch it. Probably today 45 minutes‚ and in the near future 60 minutes.
‘It was his first competitive 45 minutes after a long time not involved. And what I have seen – ja‚ good,’ concluded Middendorp.
Chiefs are next in action against Maritzburg United in the Absa Premiership on Saturday evening where Billiat again is expected to feature for the log leaders.
