The Premier Soccer League and sponsor MTN have announced that the MTN8 finals will be hosted by the Mbombela Stadium on October 1.

It has been three years since the Mbombela Stadium has hosted a domestic Cup final and it will be the first time the stadium will be hosting the MTN8 finals.

The Premier Soccer League acting chief executive Mato Madlala has confirmed the venue for the finals but she is expecting supporters across the country to come out and support the teams in the finals.

‘As the League, it is in our interest to ensure that we spread football to different parts of the country to give our supporters an opportunity to watch Cup finals and we are excited to announce that Mbombela Stadium will host this season’s MTN8 final,’ Madlala said.

‘We would like to thank the different stakeholders in the city of Mbombela who, firstly, showed interest and cooperation in our discussions. We are looking forward to what we hope will be a great Cup final on 01 October. We also want to thank our partners, MTN for their support.’

MTN South Africa chief consumer officer Larry Annetts says he is confident that the fans will come out in numbers to watch the finals at ‘such a world class venue’.

‘We are very excited to be sharing the MTN8 passion with the people of Mbombela. The MTN8 has visited a number of provinces this year and to be able to conclude it at such a world class venue, in a beautiful, vibrant and friendly city is fitting for the occasion of this magnitude,’ Annetts said.

‘We have no doubt that the people of Mbombela and soccer fans across the country will come out in their numbers to witness the Wafa Wafa showdown at the Mbombela Stadium on Saturday, 01 October as the last team standing walks away with R8 million.’

Mamelodi Sundowns will now go head-to-head with Bidvest Wits for honours in the MTN8 finals at the Mbombela Stadium on October 1.

Kick-off has been set for 17:00.
