Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane has denied talk of North African teams dominating South Africa as a myth, pointing at Sundowns and Bafana Bafana.

Sundowns are fresh from hard fought 2-1 win over Zamalek in Egypt, a result which puts the Chloorkop side in a dominant position in their Caf Champions League group.

‘Me, as a coach, I’m leading the team and I’ve always, when I was at SuperSport United, wanted to break the North African, I think, myth,’ Mosimane told KickOff. ‘I always wanted to break that but I didn’t have a strong team then.’

Mosimane also referred to his success in North Africa with the national team.

‘And with Bafana, there was also a myth of Egypt – the mighty Egypt. We played the mighty Egypt with Bafana, we beat them 1-0 [on 26 March 2011] and we broke that thing because everybody said, “but we haven’t beaten Egypt in a competitive match.”‘

‘I remember when ‘Killer’ [Katlego Mphela] provided the country with an opportunity to kill the myth and ‘Killer’ came to the party, and we went to the Military Stadium and never lost. I remember Andile Jali was top – man of the match in my opinion.”

Mosimane has now turned his attention towards ending West African dominance over South African sides.

‘I believe Bafana will break the myth of West Africa – Nigeria, Cameroon – we will break the ice on that, it’s just a question of time,’ he concluded.
