Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Dennis Onyango

Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango has been ranked amongst the best goalkeepers of 2016 by International Federation of Football History & Statistics.

The Ugandan shot-stopper is now ranked 10th on the list voted for by football experts from 50 countries made their selections as part of the 30th IFFHS annual elections.

Onyango played at the Fifa Club World Cup for Mamelodi Sundowns and is now ranked higher than Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech and Barcelona’s shot stopper Andre Ter Stegen.

However, Onyango is also among the nominees in the running for the CAF Player of the Year Awards for the category of players based in Africa.

The Ugandan says he is grateful to the club and owner for the faith they have shown him since joining the Brazilians and insists that he is proud to be part of the current Sundowns set up.

‘It all points to one thing; the Club is in a good space. Thank you, the Club President, Mr Patrice Motsepe for his vision. He has been by our side all the way and gave us a platform to change our lives for the better. This has also rubbed off to our national teams, look at Uganda and Zimbabwe, Liberia also had a good run,’ Onyango told the Mamelodi Sundowns website.

‘Personally, since I got to Sundowns I have become a better Goalkeeper and a better person. The dedication of our technical team and backroom staff has not gone unnoticed.

‘I am proud to be part of this current generation of Sundowns players. I also hope we inspire an even better generation of players.’
