Brondby’s South African star Lebogang Phiri is nearing a new deal with his club despite interest from Rapid Vienna.

The South Africa U23 player, who was denied the opportunity to partake in Rio 2016 by his club, has been in talks with the club for several months in a bid to renew his deal.

The star had been strongly linked with a switch to Austrian outfit Rapid Vienna but with no deal having materialised, the move appears to have gone cold.

Phiri, who has been with the Danes for four years, will see his current deal expire at the end of the season.

‘I would love to extend my contract here,’ he told reporters, reports KickOff.

‘It’s a good club for me, and over the years I have managed to establish myself as a real player in the team.

‘And right now we play the type of football that suits me best. So if I get the chance to extend my contract, I will be more than willing to do it. We’re pretty close. Both parties want to win,’ he concluded.

The 21-year-old Phiri made 40 appearances for Brondby last season.
