Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane has revealed that he wants Kaizer Chiefs boss Steve Komphela to survive at the club.
The relationship between the two coaches go back to their playing days where they both represented Bafana Bafana in the 1990s.
Many expect that Komphela’s time at Naturena will come to an end when his contract expires in June. The former Maritzburg United coach has failed to live up to expectations at the club after taking over from Stuart Baxter, with the team failing to win any silverware since the Englishman’s departure.
Despite his lack of silverware, the Chiefs boss has often spoken of how he has a vision for the team, which involves more than just silverware, and that there is a ‘process’ in place.
When asked in a press conference on Wednesday if he could perhaps see what his former teammate is trying to achieve at Amakhosi, the Brazilians’ coach refused to be drawn into discussions about his former Bafana teammate, but instead revealed his admiration for his colleague.
‘You know Steve is my brother, he’s my friend. I want Steve to stay in football because we need to survive as local coaches, especially black coaches. So, I want him to hang around. You know my feelings about Steve, it’s not about the game. He’s a guy that I used to fly around with from Greece and Turkey to play for Bafana – he was my captain.
‘We go beyond that, he’s a guy I brought to work with me in Bafana Bafana, he helped me and I remember you guys were saying, “How can you bring two bulls in one kraal?” To me, it’s not about that, it’s how I deal with people. I brought Gavin Hunt to help me as an assistant with Bafana, when we went to Zambia – no issues.
‘I’ve brought Manqoba [Mngqithi] to work with me, he’s a full-time coach – no problems. I brought Jairo Leal, who won the World Cup, to work with me. So, I can work with experienced coaches. I have a soft spot for Steve, and it’s outside the game. So, I would not answer that.’
