The South African Football Players Union (Safpu) has told Kaizer Chiefs to pay compensation to their outgoing players.
The Amakhosi recently announced that as many as 20 players were being released by the club, but that move has come under scrutiny, with several players disputing the grounds of their release, reports SoccerLaduma.
A statement by Safpu’s Deputy President Tebogo Monyai read: ‘As SAFPU, we are saying there is nothing wrong with a club releasing players. I’m not talking about just Kaizer Chiefs only. What we are against is that you can’t release a player without engaging him first.
‘A player does not have to see on television, newspapers or in the media that he has been released. When the player signed a contract, it was done between him and the club. The same should apply when it’s time for the parties to part ways,’ Monyai continued.
‘Some of the players that we have spoken to have mentioned that they were never consulted. They saw it in the media and we find that unfair.’
Now, Monyai has revealed Safpu expects Chiefs to pay compensation to the players, or else, the matter may be taken to the the PSL’s Dispute Resolution Chamber.
‘The player still needs to see if there is another club out there that will be interested to see him and possibly buy him out of his contract. If not, Kaizer Chiefs must sit down with the players and say, “We are willing to settle for six months out of your two years, for example.” Then we will be happy if the club and the players agree on certain settlements,’ explained Monyai.
