Mamelodi Sundowns faced Zamalek in a Caf Champions League tie on Sunday as the Brazilians ran out winners by a 2-1 scoreline.

The game got off to an enterprising start as both sides look to make progress down the flanks.Hlompho Kekana then fired the first shot at goal as he tried his luck from miles out, forcing a save with nine minutes gone.

Downs were looking good in possession but they hit the panic button in the 14th minute as they scrambled the ball clear from the box.

Sundowns broke the deadlock in the 19th minute as Tiyani Mabunda blasted home a rebound following an effort from Keagan Dolly which had struck the post.

Four minutes later there was work to be done for Denis Onyango as Zamalek tried a free kick, but the goalkeeper had little difficulty making the save.

Zamalek turned on the pressure over the following period of play as Sundowns were forced to contain them. Them, with 39 minutes played, the Egyptians leveled the scores through Mohammed Ebrahim as he put the ball beyond the on-rushing Onyango.

The scores remained level at the interval.

The second-half began with more pressure from Zamalek as Onyango was forced into a fine save after 53 minutes. Sundowns then had a chance just after the hour mark, but Leonardo Castro’s header was comfortably collected.

Sundowns then began to apply some serious pressure of their own as first Khama Billiat was denied by an excellent save before a Castro effort the rattled the crossbar. Then, with 66 minutes gone, Billiat put the Brazilians back in front with a calm finish having been picked out by Dolly.

Onyango was called into action again in the 77th minute but made no mistake with his punching clearance. Zamalek were pressing hard, but in the end, Sundowns held firm.

The score remained 2-1 at full-time.
