Disgraced former PSL club Moroka Swallows could make a shock return to the top flight following a potential purchase of the club’s status.
The Dube Birds were relegated to the third tier of South African football following a dreadful campaign last term, but with a new consortium calling the shots at the club, the stabilising of their finances could provide a means to return to the limelight.
‘We have entered into two crucial discussions and are in the final leg with a team in the NFD and one in the PSL about selling their status,’ consortium leader Education Panyaza Lesufi told EWN on Tuesday.
The identity of the clubs in question has yet to be revealed, but reports have previously surfaced suggesting the top flight side is Chippa United.
Swallows, meanwhile, currently owe both players and technical staff millions in unpaid salaries, though Lesufi is confident the crisis will be resolved.
‘I can boldly declare that we’ve managed to take the club out its problems, we have a clean balance sheet and bank account,’ he said.
‘I can declare that the debt is huge, it’s massive. It’s a debt that goes into a couple of million [of Rands]. Players are owed huge salaries and signing-on fees. The technical team hasn’t been paid. Those are debts carried on.’
Swallows are one of the most historic clubs in South African football history, having been founded way back in 1947.
The club has suffered successive relegations in the past two seasons.
