Percy Tau has won yet another trophy with Al Ahly after they were crowned 2022-23 Egyptian Premier League champions.
The Egyptian giant walked away with their 43rd Egyptian Premier League title, and it’s the first one they’ve won since 2020. In the two years before that, their biggest rivals, Zamalek, beat them both times.
It’s also the club’s third trophy of the season, after beating Wydad Casablanca in the CAF Champions League and beating Pyramids FC in the 2023 Egypt Super Cup.
It’s also the fifth trophy that Marcel Koller has won with the Reds since he took over the team less than a year ago. Earlier this season, the Reds won the Egypt Cup and the Super Cup from last year.
The team also has a chance to win the quadruple if they win the Egypt Cup in 2023. In the round of 16, they will play El-Dakhelya.
But the club’s main goal for the season has always been to win the league title, which they did with five games to spare.
After Ceramica Cleopatra beat Pyramids FC 2-1, it was mathematically impossible for Pyramids FC to catch Al Ahly and win the title.
In the 37th minute, a beautiful free kick by Karim Hafez gave Pyramids FC the lead, but Al Ahly loanee Salah Mohsen tied the game right before halftime.
Mohsen scored the game-winning goal for Ceramica with only seven minutes left on the clock, giving his parent club its first league title in three years.
The Reds have been in the lead for most of the season. They have won 23 of the 29 games they have played and tied the other six.
Zamalek dropped out of the race early, so Al Ahly and Pyramids FC were the only ones left to compete for the title. However, Al Ahly won thanks to their experience and consistency.
Al Ahly will now try to win the league title without losing a game. They still have to play Zamalek, Arab Contractors, Haras El-Hodood, Pyramids FC, and Al Masry.
