Cape Town City FC owner John Comitis believes new head coach Eric Tinkler is the man to take the team forward in the PSL, writes WADE PRETORIUS.
Orlando Pirates and Cape Town City performed somewhat of a coaching exchange as Tinkler found himself as the new PSL franchise’s head coach earlier this month after being let go by Orlando Pirates. Despite originally intending to relocate with Mpumalanga Black Aces, Muhsin Ertugral pounced at the opportunity to take over from Tinkler at Pirates.
Comitis believes the former Bafana Bafana international midfielder has the necessary skills for the job and is more suited the Cape Town project than Pirates’ new boss.
‘You can’t take anything away from his [Ertugral] experience and his knowledge, he would certainly stabilise the ship instantly but this is a long-term project and sometimes, if I’ve got to be honest, Muhsin is maybe not a long-term coach,’ Comitis told SASoccermag.co.za.
‘He likes to perform and then perhaps move on to something bigger and better. So in a way, perhaps this more conservative approach with Eric Tinkler, who is very, very qualified is the way to build the blocks.’
Tinkler, who finished his international career just two caps short of 50 appearances, holds his Uefa Pro License coaching badges and most notably took Orlando Pirates to the final of the Caf Confederation Cup in 2015 before falling at the last hurdle to Etoile du Sahel.
Comitis has moved quickly to bolster his technical team recruiting Ian Taylor to assist Tinkler while Bafana international Calvin Marlin will be the goalkeeping coach. Former AmaZulu head coach Craig Rosslee has returned to the Mother City to take up the role as the club’s Director of Football.
Tinkler got his first taste of his new team on Monday when he took training in Green Point on Monday as the club gears up for the upcoming PSL season and MTN8 quarter-final against Kaizer Chiefs.
