Cape Town City’s fairytale start to PSL action took another twist as they topped the league standings after edging Chippa United in Port Elizabeth.
The hosts entered the match as slight favourites owing their to one-year unbeaten record at home, but that advantage was quickly erased.
City captain Lebogang Manyama continued his fine form as he found the net from the penalty spot after a foul on Sibusiso Masina in the 18th minute. The visitors held firm into the break as they looked for three vital points on the road.
Substitute forward Judas Moseamedi made it two in the 73rd minute before Katlego Mashego pulled one back for Dan Malesela’s side. However, his side failed to complete the comeback which allowed City to hang on for a fifth consecutive win across all competitions.
This catapults City to the top of the table on 17 points after nine matches as Chippa find themselves in ninth, with just nine points accumulated so far.
SuperSport United were held at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday as Baroka claimed a vital point against the high-flying Matsatsantsa.
Thabo Mnyamane opened the scoring in the 37th minute beating Oscarine Masuluke to send the visitors in front. Baroka pulled level in the 67th minute when Richard Matloga beat Ronwen Williams.
Neither side managed to find the elusive winner as Stuart Baxter’s side were forced to settle for a point on the road.
