Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Godfrey Walusimbi has revealed that he opted to go home to Uganda instead of joining Chippa United on loan before his departure from Naturena.

The Ugandan international joined Chiefs before the start of the 2018-19 season from Kenyan Gohr Mahia. However, things didn’t go according to plan for the left back as he made just 10 appearances in the Absa Premiership before he was released by the Amakhosi to make way for Daniel Akpeyi – who came in from the Chilli Boys.

The left back is now a free agent, and is back in his home country training on his own while he looks to find a new employer. Despite this, Walusimbi has kept his place in the Ugandan national team for this weekend’s African Cup of Nations qualifier with Tanzania.

Speaking in an interview with the Sunday Monitor, Walusimbi revealed that his exit from Naturena was not as it seemed from the outside, as the club attempted to offload him to Chippa.

‘They told me that because I’m a national team player, I needed to get playing time and therefore I should allow [this]  and go to Chippa United on loan,’ said Walusimbi.

‘This was on the last day of transfers. I asked them why they didn’t tell me early enough for me to prepare myself because they knew this was their plan all along. I just decided to come back home and work alone as I await another opportunity. I just wanted to be free.’

‘It didn’t break me. I just came back home and continued to work hard and good enough. The coach (Sebastien Desabre) knows my qualities and here I am. I’m hungrier than ever,’ he concluded.
