SuperSport United goalkeeper Ronwen Williams believes his side showed real character to eliminate defending Telkom Knockout champions Mamelodi Sundowns.
A 10-man Matsatsantsa side finally defeated Sundowns 3-1 on penalties, following a goalless draw after 120 minutes of their quarter-final match at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday.
The 24-year-old shot-stopper saved two penalties, but humbly deflected the praise to his teammates.
‘I hear people talk about that I’m a penalty specialist, but I’m only doing my job as a keeper,’ Williams said.
‘If you think it was tough for me, spare a thought for the players who had to battle it out with 10 men against a formidable team like Sundowns. They aren’t the African champions for nothing, you know.’
Williams believes his 10-men side showed real character to get back into the match after Onismor Bhasera was red-carded just past the hour mark.
‘The players showed an abundance of character. And when you win matches in this fashion where you have to battle, is very rewarding – I’m over the moon with our efforts,’ he added.
SuperSport United will now take on Baroka in the Absa Premiership on 19 November.
The match at Peter Mokaba Stadium kicks off at 15:30.
