Bloemfontein Celtic welcomed Bidvest Wits to Seisa Ramabodu Stadium on Saturday as the visitors showed their tenacity to claim a 2-1 victory.
The game got off to a fast start as Gabadinho Mhango had the first chance after barely a minute of action, but saw his effort comfortably saved.
It took just three further minutes for the deadlock to be broken as Thabang Monare headed home following a set piece delivered by Elias Pelembe.
The match was reduced to somewhat of a midfield battle over the following period of play, as their side was able to boss proceedings in the middle of the park.
Musa Nyatama had a weak shot comfortably dealt with by Darren Keet in the Wits goal but Celtic got their equaliser just a minute later, on the half-hour mark, as Atusaye Nyondo slotted home a low effort after an excellent run.
Celtic’s Lyle Lakay tested Keet with a stinging effort a few minutes later in what was the last effort of the half as the score remained 1-1 at the interval.
Mhango got Wits’ second half off to the best possible start as his superb run and expert finish put his side back in front.
The ensuing period of play saw the game return to somewhat of a battle of attrition as neither side was able to sustain control over the ball, nor create any clear-cut chances.
With time ticking on, Buhle Mkhwanazi had a shot blocked before Mhango struck a powerful effort off target. Sifiso Myeni then had a golden chance to score with his first touch, but saw his effort deflect wide.
In the end, Wits held on to record a valuable three points.
