Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela admits his side lack the desire and inability to deal with pressure from Bidvest Wits following their 2-1 defeat in their Absa Premiership opener.

The  Glamour Boys suffered a 2-1 defeat against Wits in their opening Absa Premiership match of the season by goals from Elias Pelembe and Thulani Hlatshwayo.

However, Chiefs defender Lorenzo Gordinho reduced the deficit to 2-1 in the 82nd minute from a William Twala free-kick.

Komphela believed the Clever Boys show more desire to win the match than his Amakhosi side and he admits that his side could’ve done better in trying to deal with their pressing game.

‘I think one of the things that we did wrong tonight was we played to their strength, we allowed them to keep the ball in the air and didn’t bring the ball down and play,’ Komphela told SuperSport after the match.

‘Secondly, I think their pressing game was better than ours – they showed more desire than we did. Those are the two defining things that I thought if we could have dealt with better we could have come through.’

Komphela says his side prepared themselves for an aerial battle with Wits, however, his side were undone and failed to defend the ball in the air.

‘We knew that would happen and you try your utmost best to be ready for it and as it happens you say, “but goodness me how could it happen?” when you knew it was going to happen,’ he added.

Kaizer Chiefs will be hoping to redeem themselves when they take on newly-formed side Cape Town City in their MTN8 at the Cape Town Stadium on Friday.

Kick-off has been set for 20:00.
