SuperSport United midfielder Reneilwe Letsholonyane says he felt it was time to move on for a fresh challenge after eight trophy-laden years with Kaizer Chiefs.
Speaking to The Star in his first interview as an ex-Kaizer Chiefs player, Letsholonyane cooled talk that the club allowed him to exit Naturena due to his age.
Yeye revealed that contrary to reports, his was offered a two-year contract extension by Chiefs but felt it was the right time to make a move, presumably his last before he retires.
‘I was actually given a two-year contract,’ revealed Letsholonyane.
‘The club, obviously, wanted me to stay, and so did the coach (Steve Komphela) but I felt it was time to move on to face other challenges before I retire.
‘I feel I still have a few more seasons left in me, but I wanted to spend those tackling other challenges and SuperSport became an ideal destination.’
The call on whether to end his career at Chiefs was not one that came easily to the 33-year-old midfielder, who won two league titles while in the famous Amakhosi strip.
‘I did not make this decision lightly. I had to consult my family about this, but at the end of the day I had to make the final call.’
Letsholonyane, who will join former teammates Keegan Ritchie and Reyaad Pieterse at Matsatsantsa, is ready to work hard and will not rest on his reputation in order to land a starting role under Stuart Baxter.
‘All I need to do now is work hard to earn my place in the team,’ added Yeye.
The player made 22 appearances for Chiefs in the Premiership this season, scoring twice.
His trophy haul with Amakhosi consists of two Premiership titles, two MTN8 trophies, a Telkom Charity Cup, a Telkom Knockout, a Nedbank Cup, and a Carling Black Label Cup.
