From Banyana Banyana’s heartbreaking loss, to Arsenal’s stunning comeback against Spurs … SportsClub‘s JUANDRE JOUBERT takes a look at the memorable moments in the world of sport over the weekend.

Soccer

Banyana Banyana came agonisingly close to clinching the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. They suffered a heartbreaking penalty shootout loss to Nigeria. The ladies still did the country proud as their second-place finished ensured them a spot in next year’s Women’s World Cup, to be held in France.

It was Super Sunday in the Premier League as Arsenal hosted North London rivals Tottenham, while Liverpool hosted the Merseyside derby. Both matches did not disappoint.

At the Emirates, Arsenal took an early lead, but two goals from Spurs in the space of three minutes had the away side in the lead. Arsenal staged a comeback with three second-half goals to claim a famous 4-2 victory over their arch-rivals.

At Anfield, the goalkeepers stole the show by making some great saves as it looked like the Merseyside derby would end in a goalless draw. With literally no time left on the clock, Virgil van Dijk skewed a long-range effort only for Pickford to inexplicably palm it back into the air, the ball then bouncing off the bar and into the path of Divock Origi, who scored the winner.

Rugby

At Twickenham, a Springbok-dominated Barbarians side overturned a 28-7 deficit to clinch a 38-35 victory over Argentina on Saturday. Elton Jantjies slotted a 79th-minute drop goal to seal the victory for the Baa-Baas.

Boxing

Early on Sunday morning (SA time), Tyson Fury made his long-awaited return, against the undefeated Deontay Wilder. In what was a proper heavyweight battle, the three judges all had different decisions. One giving Wilder the victory, the second giving Fury the victory, and the third scoring the fight a draw. Hopefully, we will get to see a rematch.
