Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo put on a magnificent driving display to win the Monaco Grand Prix ahead of Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel and the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton.
Despite suffering power issues and being 30km/h slower in parts of the track, Ricciardo drove magnificently to lead from start to finish and win by a comfortable 7.8 seconds to give Red Bull their second victory of the season.
Ricciardo’s teammate, Max Verstappen, was equally as good; starting from the back of the grid, he made up 11 places to finish in ninth place. The Dutchman flew through the field to be in 10th after 24 laps while he also had to make an extra stop because he wasn’t happy with the tyres, which halted his charge. After his second stop, he made up the places he lost with relative ease. He did have a bit of fight with Carlos Sainz for ninth, where both drivers cut corners to stay in front, but the stewards just issued a warning to both drivers. He could not catch the drivers in front of him, but it was nonetheless a great drive by Verstappen.
The Mercedes drivers did not have the best day, but not the worst either. Championship leader, Hamilton (third) never got close enough to pass the Ferrari of Vettel, and it was exactly the same with Valtteri Bottas (fifth), who could not get passed Kimi Räikönnen.
There was only one major incident when hometown hero Charles Leclerc slammed into the back of Brendon Hartley after his brakes failed.
After a Virtual Safety Car (VSC), Vettel struggled to get the tyre temperature back up, which played into the hands of Ricciardo, which ensured a comfortable win.
A first Monaco victory for Ricciardo, 11 places gained by Verstappen … a pretty successful day of racing for Red Bull Racing at the Circuit de Monaco.
