PUMA caught up with South African Netball rising star Karla Victor to talk about representing her country, her favourite achievements and how she improved her game since last year.
You were recently part of the U21 team that won the Netball World Youth Cup qualifiers, how was that experience?
It was an incredible experience; the memories made together are forever. I learned the importance of maintaining a strong mindset and the value of absorbing insights from a new coach.
The strengths of the U21 team? Our height advantage, speed, skills, and exceptional communication.
How does it feel to represent your country?
Playing netball for South Africa is truly special because it’s not just about representing a nation, but about feeling the unwavering support of the entire country behind us throughout the tournament, fuelling our determination and unity on the court.
What are your favourite achievements so far?
Being named Player of the Tournament at the African Qualifiers Cup and serving as both captain and flag bearer for South Africa at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago, where I felt immense pride in representing my country on the international stage.
Tell us more about the trip to Trinidad and Tobago?
Leading the SA U18 Fast Five netball team at the Commonwealth Youth Games was an incredible experience. On the court, it was an honour to represent my country and compete against talented teams from around the world. Off the court, I enjoyed immersing myself in the vibrant culture, exploring the local cuisine, and forming lasting friendships with athletes from diverse backgrounds. The trip was a memorable journey of sportsmanship, camaraderie, and personal growth that I will cherish forever.
What do you love about your position?
Playing as a centre allows me to transition between attacking and defending, utilizing a diverse skill set that includes agility, vision, passing accuracy, and defensive prowess to effectively control the flow of the game.
Which parts of your game have improved over the past year?
My speed, particularly in terms of reaction time and agility, has significantly improved, along with my ability to read the game and anticipate movements. Also, the quick release of the ball to my teammates, which has been instrumental in enhancing my performance.
What attracted you to partner with PUMA?
Seeing athletes like national team star Khanyisa Chawane adorned in their stylish apparel, inspired me to aspire to that level and prompted me to express to my mom my dream of one day also representing PUMA.

Your advice to girls who feel there are barriers to their dreams?
Your dreams are worth pursuing, no matter the challenges you may encounter along the way. Stay determined, believe in yourself, and persistently pursue your passions. Remember that every obstacle is an opportunity to grow stronger and more resilient.
Who has guided your netball career?
A combination of supportive coaches, dedicated teammates, and inspirational mentors who have provided guidance, encouragement, and invaluable wisdom every step of the way. But the ones who have guided me the most are my Mom and Dad and Burtha de Kock who started coaching me when I was 11 years old. Their expertise, encouragement, and belief in my abilities have played a crucial role in shaping my journey and helping me reach new heights in the sport.
